S22.17 Fat compositions in calf milk replacers

Today, a standard fat composition in calf milk replacer consists of palm- and coconut oil. The fatty acid pattern of these vegetable oils makes them very suitable for calves. Both the use of palm oil and coconut oil are currently under discussion. The focus is increasing on local and sustainably produced fat sources. We can look at other vegetable fat sources, but also fat sources of animal origin and insect oil.

S22.16 Amino acids in calf milk replacers

Protein is a very important component for growth of young calves. However, protein is also an expensive component and an excess of protein gives extra pressure on the calf’s body and has a negative effect on the environment.

S22.13 The effects of Profat on milk production and health of dairy cows and its financial benefits

Since 1995, we added Profat to our product portfolio. This product is a palm-based calcium soap made from palm fatty acid distillate and has a medium level of palmitic acid. In 2022, we conducted a feed trial with this product and the main objective was to test the use of Profat at normal European farm level. In this trial, the focus was to monitor:

  • Production figures;
  • Animal health / Body Condition;
  • Dry matter intake;
  • Financial added value.

S22.12 Investigating the effect of a higher protein level in calf concentrates

The total protein intake of calves during the milk period is determined by the intake of milk, concentrates, and roughage feed such as hay or straw. In the first weeks of life, the total protein intake depends only on the intake of milk. A few weeks after birth, the calf will start to consume concentrates and roughage feed. As the calves get older and weaned, they will consume more and more concentrates and roughage feed.

S22.7 The effects of Frafat F85-10 on milk production and health of dairy cows and its financial benefits

We added Frafat F85-10 to our product portfolio in 2021. This product is made from palm stearin fraction and has a high level of palmitic acid. We conducted a feed trial with this product and the main objective was to collect a set of data about Frafat F85-10 under normal European farm level. In this trial, the focus was to monitor:

  • Production figures;
  • Animal health;
  • Different seasons of the year (Winter / Spring / Summer);
  • Financial added value.

S21.4 Calf milk replacer: ENERGIZED CALF MILK

In this trial, a milk replacer was tested that contains more energy, called Energized Calf Milk (25% fat). We investigated whether lowering the osmolarity of milk replacers benefits the health and growth of calves and do we see enough benefits in health and growth to justify the higher cost price?

S19.7 Motherless rearing with the Pigipro ALFF

A technical and economic evaluation of a trial conducted with the Pigipro ALFF. Three groups of piglets where raised with the Pigipro ALFF

S19.2 The effects of Pigipro milk and the Pigipro ALFF on mortality and growth rates of suckling piglets (2-3)

Trial conducted at the Swine Innovation Centre (VIC Sterksel), in cooperation with Wageningen University to test the effects of providing Pigipro 2 Milk Wean from day 14 to day 28 on the mortality and growth rates of suckling piglets. The piglets in the Pigipro 2 Milk Wean group had significantly higher growth from day 14 to 22 and continued to grow more from day 22 to day 28.

S18.5 The effects of Pigipro milk and the Pigipro ALFF on mortality and growth rates of suckling piglets

Trial conducted at the Swine Innovation Centre (VIC Sterksel), in cooperation with Wageningen University, to test the effects of providing Pigipro 1 Milk Care through the Pigipro ALFF on the mortality and growth rates of suckling piglets. The piglets in the Pigipro ALFF group were significantly heavier than their counterparts in the control groups.

S18.2 The effect of increasing ash content in milk replacer on the technical performance and health of rearing calves

Trial conducted at research centre "De Haar", where we compared three levels of ash content (6.5%, 8.5%, 10.5%) in calf milk replacers, to test their effect on performance and health. We concluded that too low or too high ash contents have negative effects on growth.

S18.1 The influence of protein content in milk replacer on the growth performance of rearing calves

Trial conducted at research centre "De Haar", where we compared three levels of protein content (17%, 21%, 25%) in calf milk replacers, to test their effect on growth. We concluded that increasing the protein content has a positive diminishing effect on growth.

S14.3 Prestarter including Schils SuperSpray

Description of a trial conducted on 120 piglets, under supervision of the University of Leuven. Feeding Schils SuperSpray resulted into more growth and better feed conversion.

S14.2 Schils piglet milk replacer - Pigipro 1 Milk-Y

Description of a trial conducted on 156 piglets and 11 sows, under supervision of the University of Leuven. Feeding Pigipro 1 Milk-Y milk replacer resulted into less mortality, higher growth and more homogenous groups.

S14.1 The effect of an intensive feeding schedule on growth and solid feed intake of a calf

A comparison between two feeding schedules (35kg and 50kg), conducted on trial farm “De Haar”. More intensive schedules resulted into better growth results, more bodyweight and higher solid feed intake.

S14.1 The effect of using a CMR with or without skimmed milk powder (SMP) in an intensive feeding schedule on growth and solid feed intake of a calf

There is almost no difference in growth and solid feed intake per period between the feeding of a CMR with (45%) or without SMP.

S13.1 Intenstive Start - Calves

The results of a trial conducted on three different groups of calves. Feeding more CMR or more grams per liter at the start will result in more growth and better dry feed intake. We recommend a concentration of 150gr CMR + 1L water and more liters during the first 4 weeks.
